Holter monitor is a small 5-lead (7-channel) ECG device. The ideal solution for Holter monitoring (including children and small animals). It can also be used as a universal ECG device for small clinics and veterinary practices.

Holter ECG monitoring (24-hour ECG monitoring) is a method of continuous registration of heart activity using a portable device. During the day and during a normal lifestyle, with subsequent decoding of the obtained ECG data.

The first developer of this method was Norman Jeffrey Holter, in whose honor it is named.

Electrocardiography (ECG) is undoubtedly one of the oldest and most common diagnostic methods in cardiology. However, the short duration, fixed time and place of recording, the influence of certain factors during this period often complicate its interpretation, and sometimes do not provide the necessary information. Holter ECG is more informative due to its duration, which makes it possible to record ECG changes that may be associated with certain symptoms and help in establishing a diagnosis.

Indications for Holter ECG:
- complaints and symptoms possibly caused by arrhythmia (episodes of palpitations, loss of consciousness, episodes of unspecified dizziness, shortness of breath);
- assessment of heart rate variability in the presence of sleep apnea (often a feeling of "brokenness" in the morning) and diabetic neuropathy;
- diagnosis of short episodes of myocardial ischemia (with contraindications to stress tests or their uninformativeness), which may manifest as discomfort behind the sternum, pain, shortness of breath;
- assessment of the effectiveness of antiarrhythmic therapy;
- diagnostics of complications in certain categories of patients with and without symptoms of arrhythmia (hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, patients who have had myocardial infarction, syndrome of prolonged or shortened QT interval);
- assessment of pacemaker performance.

The practically absence of contraindications, with the exception of local inflammatory processes and extensive chest wounds, makes it possible to widely use this method in all age categories for diagnostics. During the study, it is necessary to avoid certain types of exposure: microwave ovens, metal detectors, radio transmitters, it is forbidden to conduct computer, magnetic resonance tomography and ultrasound diagnostics.

On the day of the study, the doctor examines the patient, attaches electrodes to the chest that record electrical impulses from the heart, installs a portable recorder, and issues a diary. After that, the patient returns to his usual lifestyle and during the day keeps a diary and indicates in it:
- time and type of physical activity (running, walking, lifting upstairs), his well-being at the same time;
- possible symptoms associated with arrhythmia (palpitations, general weakness, dizziness, discomfort behind the sternum, pain, shortness of breath)
- taking medications and which ones.

After a day, the device is removed and the data is entered into the computer for analysis. Holter ECG contains from 100 to 150 thousand complexes and special automatic ECG analysis algorithms process them and issue a conclusion. The doctor then studies this data.

The advantages of the method are absolute safety for the patient, non-invasiveness, duration of recording, outpatient conduct, which allows you to assess the work of the heart in everyday life.
